Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

It bears little resemblance to Carrie Fisher's screamingly funny bestselling novel, yet director Mike Nichols's grand tour through "Hollywood Babylon" behaviour and Bel Air-head lifestyles still emerges as a reasonably savage showbiz satire. Meryl Streep plays the selfish actress in celebrity detox, who moves back home with her overbearing mother (Shirley MacLaine), in this thinly veiled account of Fisher's own poignant love/hate relationship with real-life mother Debbie Reynolds. Both stars rise to the bitchy one-liner occasion and turn on the glitz, glamour and grit in an engaging ride on the hypocritical Hollywood highway.
