Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Clyde Fitch's play had already been filmed as The Woman in the Case (1916) and The Law and the Woman (1922) before Paramount released this sound version. Berthold Viertel's penultimate Hollywood picture before he relocated to the UK is pretty racy for its day, with sophisticate Claudette Colbert posing as a woman of easy virtue to deliver her lawyer lover, Melvyn Douglas, from a murder rap. Sadly, there's not a shred of conviction about either her performance or the storyline, in which her dealings with mobster William "Stage" Boyd are complicated by his vengeful mistress, Lilyan Tashman
