Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

When Steve McQueen knew that his cancer was terminal, he swiftly made two features - the other was The Hunter - after a long period of chosen inactivity. This western is a good deal better than it deserves to be, given that McQueen fell out with the credited, relatively inexperienced director William Wiard (whose previous work included a number of episodes of The Rockford Files TV series), and the shoot was ramshackle, with pages of the script discarded daily. Nevertheless, this is an extremely well photographed (by John Alonzo) film, with stunning Panavision landscapes, and McQueen captures the grim, realistic mood perfectly. A TV two-parter directed by Jack Starrett and starring David Carradine as Horn is also excellent, but this version has the look of the authentic West.
