Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

This typically humane but uninvolving biographical drama from director Richard Attenborough is sadly no Gandhi. Set during the First World War, it centres on the romance between a young Ernest Hemingway, injured in combat, and the nurse who cares for him. One of the film's problems is the total lack of chemistry between its stars, Chris O'Donnell and Sandra Bullock, both hopelessly miscast and bringing a touch of LA mall culture to the trenches. Despite some attractive location photography in Italy, the whole project seems curiously stillborn; eclipsed by the thematically similar The English Patient, it was a critical and box-office bomb.
