Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Two of Hollywood's biggest stars, Cher and Demi Moore, weigh in to the abortion debate with this surprisingly gritty compendium about the subject. The three tales in this film deal with unwanted pregnancies from the 1950s to the present. In the first story, Moore plays a woman taking desperate measures at a time when abortion was illegal; in the second, Sissy Spacek is the 1970s mother and wife who divides her family when she contemplates abortion; while Cher takes centre stage and makes her directorial debut in the concluding story about a woman doctor facing the wrath of anti-abortionists. Although made for TV, this takes a measured, intelligent look at a controversial issue and does not fall into the trap of preaching. The performances from the stars, too, are nicely understated.
