After the terrifying Antichrist and gloomy Melancholia, Danish auteur Lars von Trier's latest provocation completes his so-called "Trilogy of Depression". It charts the life story of Charlotte Gainsbourg's self-loathing sex addict Joe in vivid, annotated flashback, as told to Stellan Skarsgård's bookish bachelor. Courageous, willowy newcomer Stacy Martin dominates as the young Joe across the first five chapters (of eight), which test the elasticity of the "unreliable narrator". Meanwhile Skarsgård playfully interrupts the reminiscences by questioning their psychoanalytical interpretation. Sexual frankness threatens to define the viewing experience which is marked by explicit scenes from a virginity-cancelling quickie with Shia LaBeouf's motorcycle lunk to a toilet-sex Olympics on a commuter train (although the nether regions of "adult film" actors are cleverly edited into the action to protect the stars' modesty). More than that, however, Nymphomaniac is a picaresque about self-discovery, which strays into extreme Mike Leigh territory when Uma Thurman's wronged wife challenges our promiscuous protagonist. Ending on a cliffhanger of sorts, the intriguing Volume I demands the darker Volume II.
