Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Raymond van de Klundert's semi-autobiographical bestseller, A Woman Goes to the Doctor, made him a celebrity in his native Netherlands. But those unfamiliar with the story of a philandering husband who strays while his spouse is dying of breast cancer will find this a very tough watch. It's bad enough seeing advertising executive Barry Atsma cavorting with artist Anna Drijver, as feisty Carice van Houten endures the agonies and humiliation of her ravaging treatment and inevitable decline. But Reinout Oerlemans's flashy direction ensures it's almost impossible to empathise with the confusion and pain that Atsma feels as he seduces another woman to give him the strength to nurse his wife. Clearly the visual slickness is designed to reflect Atsma's self-obsessed dilemma, but it also imposes a superficiality that makes van Houten's poignant performance feel unduly melodramatic.
