Summary

A US Cavalry colonel is ordered to escort a trainload of whisky to Denver. Prepared for a straightforward job, he little realises the trouble his cargo will cause, as a gang of temperance ladies and a rascally Sioux tribe try to get their hands on the shipment for very different reasons. Comedy Western, starring Burt Lancaster, Lee Remick, Jim Hutton, Donald Pleasence and Martin Landau.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Beleaguered cavalry officer Burt Lancaster is under attack from a bizarre collection of pressure groups in this entertaining comedy western. Lee Remick leads a brigade of temperance women who are trying to stop a shipment of whiskey from reaching liquor-dry Denver, while local Sioux tribesmen are equally eager to divert the barrels of booze. Director John Sturges is free with the wagon-trail clichés, not always to great effect, but the film's still worth a look, if only for Martin Landau as the deadpan Chief Walks-Stooped-Over and Donald Pleasence as a drunken town oracle.
