Carry On

Carry On Matron

Our Score
Subtitled From Here to Maternity, the fourth Carry On to be set in a hospital is the last in the series that manages to surmount the shortcomings of its script and be consistently funny throughout. The regulars are present and correct, with Hattie Jacques in the title role as the object of consultant Kenneth Williams's confused affections, while Sid James plays a crook who leads a raid on the clinic where they work to steal contraceptive pills. Amid the innuendo, cross-dressing and crude slapstick, there are lovely cameos from Kenneth Connor as a nervous dad-to-be and Joan Sims as an overdue mum.

A wily thief gathers a band of crooks for a plot to break into a maternity hospital and steal the supply of contraceptive pills. One of the gang gets the lie of the land by disguising himself as a nurse, but the hypochondriac head doctor and formidable matron prove constant obstacles to the heist. Comedy, starring Sid James, Kenneth Williams and Hattie Jacques.
