Our Score
Back at the helm of the video game-based franchise he inaugurated, director Paul WS Anderson puts the Zzzz in zombies with this fourth, mind-numbing instalment. If anyone remains interested, Afterlife picks up where the third entry, Extinction, left off, with Alice (Milla Jovovich) rescuing the few T-virus survivors left in a Los Angeles under siege from the living dead. Visually impressive, with lots of coolly clinical white futuristic designs, yet dramatically redundant between the glossy scenes of Xbox-influenced action, it annoyingly ends on a "to be continued..." scenario. If you ever wondered what The Matrix might look like in 3D, however, the answer can be found here with the by-now requisite slo-mo shoot-out. Also for those 3D viewers, Anderson heaves axes, artillery, shattered glass and The Thing-style dogs at the camera to wincing effect, but it still only adds up to a lame, by-the-numbers horror.

Zombie-fighting heroine Alice roams the post-apocalyptic wasteland searching for human survivors. An encounter with an old friend leads her to a rumoured sanctuary in Los Angeles, but she discovers she has walked into a deadly trap and must once again battle the hordes of the living dead. Action horror sequel, starring Milla Jovovich, Ali Larter and Wentworth Miller.
