Review

Rating: 4 out of 5.

Beautifully shot, brilliantly scored by John Barry and sensitively staged by director James Hill, this charming adaptation of Joy Adamson's bestseller is one of the great animal films. It goes without saying that all eyes will be on Elsa the lioness whenever she is on the screen, with her reluctance to take the first steps back into the wild bringing a lump to every throat. But the human performances are also first rate, with Virginia McKenna and Bill Travers bringing real warmth, rather than easy sentimentality, to their roles, while Geoffrey Keen excels as the kindly commissioner who persuades them to part with their pet.
