Review
Our Score
by
Jeremy Aspinall
More tales of terror are unearthed from another pile of dusty old videos in this slick sequel to the 2012 horror anthology. Like the original, the top-and-tail story takes place in an "abandoned" house where, on this occasion, it's two private investigators on a missing-persons case who come across the cassettes. But whereas the first film's quintet of stories were of varying quality, the calibre of the four shorts here is consistently higher. Adam Wingard (
You're Next
) directs and stars as the owner of a prosthetic eye that reveals more than it should, producing some heart-jolting moments in the process; there's a day-in-the-life-of-a-zombie story from
Blair Witch
co-director Edúardo Sanchez that's akin to Ben Wheatley's POV vampire yarn from
The ABCs of Death
); and it all ends in disorientating style with a slumber-party/alien-invasion mash-up. But the pick of the bunch is
Safe Haven
, co-directed by Timo Tjahjanto and
The Raid's
Gareth Huw Evans, in which a film crew's visit to the compound of an Indonesian cult turns demonically nasty. The deceptively sedate beginning soon gives way to a cornucopia of artery-rupturing gruesomeness, which will assuredly have some viewers all a-splutter. Terrifyingly terrific stuff.
