Our Score
Vincent Price's role here as an ex-vaudevillian madman living in a secret underground mechanical world is his only self-originated monster and is superbly tailored for the horror maestro. Phibes is a deformed maniac with a florid sense of style and an inclination to ham, who concocts a divinely ingenious revenge, gruesomely inspired by ancient plagues, on the surgeons he holds responsible for the death of his wife. Full of gaudy Art Deco excess, surprise charm and sardonic violence, this deadpan send-up is a classy fright delight. Originally billed with the timely tagline "Love means never having to say you're ugly"!
