Retired CIA agent Richard Gere and young rookie Topher Grace team up to track down a Soviet assassin, in a spy thriller that's as dated and clichéd as it sounds. It's perfectly serviceable, however, and Grace brings the smart-assed charm that made him so watchable in
That '70s Show
, but there's nothing in here we've not seen before, and done better, too. The formulaic plot fails to excite, though certain moments, including some nonsensical dialogue ("He's just an old man who thinks the war is still cold") and the sight of a man angrily eating some batteries, are inadvertently quite funny. Gere looks tough and bored at the same time, but he and Grace, with a bit of help from Martin Sheen's CIA director, pull the movie over the finish line.
Summary
A retired CIA agent returns to duty when a senator is murdered. The former spy believes the killing has all the hallmarks of an infamous Soviet assassin he spent most of his career in pursuit of, and joins forces with the inexperienced FBI agent assigned to the case. Espionage thriller, starring Richard Gere, Topher Grace and Martin Sheen.
