Rating: 2 out of 5.

A fresh intake of students at New York's School of Performing Arts sweat their way towards a start in showbiz in this makeover of Alan Parker's 1980 hit musical. Thankfully, the legwarmers are gone, to be replaced by dance sequences that wouldn't look out of place in a pop promo, and there's also a strong rap element, too. The result is clearly pitched at an audience weaned on High School Musical, who may not notice that the plot is a string of clichés, with the requisite romance, battles against parental authority and spontaneous musical numbers all delivered more or less on cue. Grown-ups who remember it all from the first time around will doubtless find it painless enough, as an eye-candy cast - lithe dancer Kherington Payne has the screen presence of a young Sharon Stone - scamper through their paces. But despite the earnest efforts of faculty members Kelsey Grammer and Charles S Dutton, dramatic impact is merely middling throughout. There's nothing here as memorable as Irene Cara's original theme song - a fact we're reminded of when a grisly new cover version seeps out over the closing credits.
