Review

Rating: 2 out of 5.

A personal journey for writer Elizabeth Gilbert in which, newly divorced but financially flush, she travelled alone through Italy, India and Bali became a bestselling, Oprah-sanctioned memoir that struck a chord with women worldwide. But this glossily aspirational, tourist-board film adaptation, co-written and directed without self-consciousness by Glee's Ryan Murphy, exploits the same apparently universal bourgeois neuroses about calories and blokes. A radiant Julia Roberts, playing Gilbert, scoffs pizza and pasta in Napoli as a quasi-political act of female empowerment, then meditates in India and finds love in the form of rugged businessman Javier Bardem in Bali. If you can swallow the guff about "Quest Physics" and the journey to "internal truth" - not to mention the sheer Western narcissism of the whole therapeutic package holiday - you may find enlightenment in the true-life Mills & Boon romance with added guilt-free carbs. Bystanders may feel slightly travel sick.
