Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

This by-the-book thriller stars Jason Statham as a federal agent who quits his job after his wife's death and moves to the Deep South to start a new life with his ten-year-old daughter. The natives are less than friendly, though, and when a local crime lord (James Franco) tries to use Statham's past with the DEA to aid his meth operation, the stage is set for a fight-to-the-end battle between good and evil. Sylvester Stallone's screenplay ticks all the requisite boxes for a white-knuckle clash between cultures and consciences, but Gary Fleder's pedestrian direction robs the story of any real momentum, while Kate Bosworth and Winona Ryder's supporting characters are wildly inconsistent. However, Statham displays a tender side rarely seen in his previous action work, and Franco adds another memorably sleazy maverick to his CV.
