Our Score
Jorge Michel Grau's accomplished debut begins innocuously enough with another impoverished nobody dying in a Mexico City shopping mall. However, the discovery of a woman's finger in his stomach during the autopsy hints at the shocking reality of the nature of this man, and the wife and three adult children he has left behind. Without him to provide for them, his cannibalistic brood are forced to go out into the world to hunt for flesh, only for their voracious activities to attract the attention of a slow-witted detective (Jorge Zárate). Echoes of Let the Right One In and Dogtooth reverberate around this atmospheric study of desperate survival, whose exceptional performances are complemented by Santiago Sánchez's arresting mix of static takes and gliding tracks and Enrico Chapela's forbidding score. But it's Grau's social commentary and insights into the adolescent psyche, rather than the gore, that make this so compelling.
