Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Enough time has elapsed for this belated sequel to feel as fresh, hard-edged and visually stylish as the original 2005 neo-noir comic-book adaptation. Continuations and new stories criss-cross as square-jawed bruiser Mickey Rourke awakes on a highway surrounded by bodies, toxic femme fatale Eva Green compels ex-lover Josh Brolin to kill her supposedly abusive husband, cocky gambler Joseph Gordon-Levitt plots to destroy corrupt senator Powers Boothe, and stripper Jessica Alba seeks vengeance for Bruce Willis's death. Once again it's all elegantly rendered in dazzling, textured monochrome sharpened by key colour splashes (red lips, orange flame, pink feathers), with its keen graphic novel perspectives creating stunning collages from the jazzy, smoky mix of gumshoe gore and hard-boiled brutality. Played stark and straight by the stellar cast (Green's copious nudity might surprise), perhaps it is slightly one-note. Yet this bolder vision conveys the essence of co-director Frank Miller's art better than ever.
