Our Score
Less popular than William Wyler's classic 1939 version and less imaginative than Luis Buñuel's 1953 reworking, this atmospheric adaptation of Emily Brontë's famous novel at least has the distinction of being better than the 1992 rendition starring Ralph Fiennes and Juliette Binoche. Timothy Dalton's Heathcliff has clearly been modelled on Laurence Olivier's 1939 portrayal, but he still smoulders to good effect and Anna Calder-Marshall makes an appealing Cathy. Obviously aiming for a little cultural respectability, producers Samuel Z Arkoff and James H Nicholson (co-founders of B-movie factory AIP) were rewarded with some striking images from cinematographer John Coquillon and steady direction from Robert Fuest.

An enigmatic orphan falls in love with the headstrong daughter of his wealthy adoptive father, and becomes a lifelong rival of her brother. However, their love is doomed to end in tragedy and as he grows up, he is driven to seek revenge on the family. Drama based on Emily Bronte's novel, with Timothy Dalton, Anna Calder-Marshall, Harry Andrews and Pamela Brown.
