10 Years

Channing Tatum produces and headlines this low-key comedy drama about a group of old high-school buddies who get together for their ten-year reunion. It's hardly a novel idea, and the stock characters are all present and correct: drunken former bully Chris Pratt, geek-made-good Justin Long, prom king Tatum and his lost love Rosario Dawson. But American Pie this ain't. Writer/director Jamie Linden (who scripted Tatum's 2010 drama Dear John) is much more concerned with wistful reminiscence than gross-out comedy. And more's the pity, because while the lack of soap opera-style revelations, fist-fights and drunken shenanigans is probably closer to reality, it also means there's a severe lack of drama. The performances are uniformly good, but no matter how believable the characters are, it's difficult to get involved when their lives are so dull.
