Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Abandoning any pretence of linear narrative, director Harmony Korine - writer of the highly controversial kids - here presents an impressionistic collection of grim insights into a neighbourhood recovering from a destructive tornado. Using a variety of techniques, including hand-held camerawork, Gummo follows two geeky adolescents (Jacob Reynolds and Nick Sutton) as they sniff glue, torture cats and gross out the locals. This extraordinary investigation into the tarnished American Dream and the desolate confusion caused by fast-food culture is repulsive, shocking and definitely not for the faint-hearted. Eventually, however, Korine penetrates the heart and sears the intellect, leaving behind a very potent mark indeed.
