Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Considering it's yet another variation on Rio Bravo, this film should feel a mite saddle-weary. But as it's John Wayne's last movie with director Howard Hawks, there's a wonderful sense of western occasion to it all. Jorge Rivero and Bob's son, Chris Mitchum, play the Confederate looters snatching Union gold, and Wayne is the colonel trying to find the traitor who's feeding information to the robbers. Meanwhile, wild-eyed Jack Elam looks askance at the whole business. It's certainly a leisurely affair, but the characters and sardonic humour make a real impression.
