Our Score
It's the Second World War and three usually very nice children are running rings around their mother (Maggie Gyllenhaal, complete with refined English accent) and fighting with their spoilt evacuee cousins. Meanwhile, mother is desperate to save her farm from the clutches of her avaricious brother-in-law (Rhys Ifans), while trying to keep absent-minded local shopkeeper Maggie Smith from turning her shop floor into a treacle pudding. Enter Nanny McPhee (Emma Thompson) to find order in the chaos. The magical moments come thick and fast in this first sequel to the equally magical original, and Thompson's whimsical script (based on Christianna Brand's Nurse Matilda children's books) is bursting with humour and warmth. There's a slightly distracting subplot about the war ministry with a cameoing Ralph Fiennes, but Bill Bailey's brief appearance as a local farmer is worth waiting for, and Lil Woods as Gyllenhaal's daughter is the best of the children - both charming and completely believable. Schmaltzy and twee to a heavenly degree, this is definitely not for the cynical, but small children will love it, especially the synchronised swimming piglets.

Summary

A woman is left running the family farm alone while her husband is fighting in the Second World War. The wart-faced magical nanny is on hand to help her cope with her unruly children, their even more mischievous evacuated cousins, and her scheming brother-in-law, who wants the farm for himself. Fantasy comedy, with Emma Thompson, Maggie Gyllenhaal and Sam Kelly.
