Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Twilight meets Invasion of the Body Snatchers in author Stephenie Meyer's soppy teen romance, here swapping vampires for aliens. Hanna star Saoirse Ronan deserved better than this, playing a teenager whose body is implanted with an intergalactic "Soul". But as one of the few humans who can fight the parasitic takeover, she uses her host to protect loved ones hidden in a cave-dwelling community. It's a daft dual part where Ronan's inner voice constantly bickers with that of her host and each moons over differing boys. The device gets old very quickly and writer/director Andrew Niccol (Gattaca) takes an overly earnest approach that also becomes a bore. The clinical design is more striking, with white alien couture and shiny silver vehicles contrasting nicely with the rustic mountain society, run by a grizzled William Hurt. However the minimal special effects are hokey and the story of two colliding minds couldn't be more mindless.
