Our Score
Director/star Ben Stiller's glossy adaptation of James Thurber's short story is a far cry from the beloved 1947 musical comedy starring Danny Kaye. Stiller's Mitty remains a man who vividly daydreams about adventure while trying to hold on to a dreary job. Only here he works for Life magazine so when redundancy looms, and with encouragement from secret object of desire Cheryl (Kristen Wiig), he decides to go in search of globetrotting photographer Sean McConnell (played by Sean Penn, taking the mickey out of himself again). It's then that his humdrum reveries become exciting reality. Stiller's fifth outing behind the camera is a surprising mix of sentiment and profundity, and his strongest attempt yet to move from full-on comedy into heartfelt drama. Beautifully shot and incredibly ambitious, the film demonstrates Stiller is well on the way to proving himself as a serious director. The skateboard scene is pretty impressive, too.
