Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Director/star Ben Stiller's glossy adaptation of James Thurber's short story is a far cry from the beloved 1947 musical comedy starring Danny Kaye. Stiller's Mitty remains a man who vividly daydreams about adventure while trying to hold on to a dreary job. With redundancy looming - and with encouragement from his secret object of desire (Kristen Wiig) - Stiller leaves Life magazine to go in search of globetrotting photographer Sean McConnell (played by Sean Penn). It's then that his humdrum reveries become exciting reality. Stiller's fifth outing behind the camera is a surprising mix of sentiment and profundity, and sees him move away from full-on comedy to embrace heartfelt drama. Beautifully shot and incredibly ambitious, the film demonstrates Stiller's skill as a director - and proves he's a pretty good on a skateboard, too.
