Our Score
Nick Murphy's intense British cop movie has a cracking cast and is atmospherically set on a washed-out Wirral coast, but it's somewhat less than the sum of its parts, leaving few genre clichés unmined. Paul Bettany and Stephen Graham play brothers Joe and Chrissie, both detectives, who live in the shadow of their dad (Brian Cox), a former police chief who was notorious for his brutal, strong-arm tactics, but who is now retired and suffering from advanced dementia. When a schoolgirl is murdered and the prime suspect looks to have got off through lack of evidence, Joe and Chrissie, fuelled by anger and alcohol, "do a Dad" and dispense some very rough justice. But there are serious consequences to their actions. Bill Gallagher's adaptation of his own BBC TV series Conviction is an intriguing tale of machismo and crazy, mixed-up morality, but it's hard to escape the feeling that it was perhaps better suited to the small screen.

Premiere. Brothers Joe and Chrissie follow in their father's footsteps and join the police, but struggle to cope with living in the shadow of the old man's heroic reputation. Their desperation to live up to their legacy leads them to commit a crime, and the fear of discovery leaves them consumed with paranoia. Thriller, starring Paul Bettany, Mark Strong, Brian Cox and Stephen Graham.
