Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Sold as a sort-of sequel to Knocked Up, Judd Apatow's midlife comedy returns to the bumpy family life of likeable LA married couple Pete (Paul Rudd) and Debbie (Leslie Mann). The couple has to deal with strains domestic, sexual and financial, not to mention patriarchal - his dad (Albert Brooks) is a scrounger, hers (John Lithgow) is cold and remote. The stress is heightened by a bickering Cold War between their daughters, aged 13 and eight, who are played by Maude and Iris Apatow, the real-life offspring of Apatow and Mann. Everyone speaks in the writer/director's trademark potty-mouthed argot (even a gynaecologist is a gagsmith) and there's the obligatory calamitous 40th birthday party. Meanwhile, turns from Apatow regulars Chris O'Dowd, Jason Segel and a freewheeling Melissa McCarthy add to the familiarity of the milieu. The surprise is just how sad and honest it all is beneath the scatology and quipping, with themes of regret, estrangement, emotional stalemate and the passage of time. Regular belly laughs help the medicine go down, although, like Apatow's last directorial effort, Funny People, it's about 20 minutes too long. And the so-called "unrated" version is even longer.
