A lone drifter suffering from partial memory loss accepts a job to look after a psychologically troubled woman in an abandoned house on an isolated island.
In a spooky house on a secluded island where dark deeds have taken place, drifter Isaac (Jonathan French) is hired to look after traumatised schizophrenic Olga (Leila Sykes) by her shifty uncle (Ben Caplan). The catch? Isaac must be strapped into a harness at all times, so that he doesn't surprise Olga in the night. From its glitchy intercom to its creepy basement, the film's house practically screams "haunted" - and then there's the monstrous stuffed rabbit Olga carries around with her... Written, directed and edited by Mc Carthy on an extremely tight budget, Caveat conjures genuine unease with scant resources, giving off strong Babadook vibes. Though the plotting and secondary performances are sometimes awkward, Mc Carthy makes up for it with a supremely creepy atmosphere. Indeed, by the climax, the mere sound of the rabbit's demented drumming will induce a Pavlovian fear response in the hardiest of viewers.
