Our Score
In the early 1940s, British producer/director Herbert Wilcox and Anna Neagle (who married in 1943) landed a contract with RKO, but their combined career in Hollywood was short-lived. Not surprising given this second filming of the 1925 Broadway musical, in which the best things were songs such as Tea for Two and I Want to Be Happy. Unwisely, Wilcox relegated the score to the background at the expense of the silly plot about a young woman who helps her uncle out of his financial and amorous difficulties. Neagle's modest singing and dancing talents and Wilcox's plodding direction are balanced slightly by a strong supporting cast that includes wisecrackers Eve Arden and Helen Broderick.
