Our Score
A trio of misfit high-school students plan the party to end all parties in this rude, outrageous and occasionally hilarious comedy. As birthday boy Thomas (Thomas Mann) desperately struggles to contain the festivities and prevent his parents' suburban home from being wrecked by over 1,000 party animals, the shindig attracts the attention of irate neighbours, police and even a TV helicopter news crew. Director Nima Nourizadeh employs the "found footage" technique of The Blair Witch Project and Cloverfield, so the entire film has purportedly been captured on video cameras and mobile phones, and the viewer is planted to great effect in the centre of the debauchery and destruction. The film loses its way as the night wears on and the partygoers' behaviour gets more excessive. But the earlier scenes have plenty of wit and snappy dialogue, and newcomer Oliver Cooper, as Thomas's smart-mouthed but well-meaning pal Costa, displays impressive comedy chops.
