Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

An ageing cineaste discovers that though movies may be sublime, they will never be a substitute for real life in this charming paean to cinema from director Federico Veiroj. Having spent a day attending to his duties at a Montevideo art house, Jorge Jellinek (a real-life film critic here making his acting debut) learns from his boss that the venue is to close owing to falling membership and a funding shortage. Thus, Jellinek is forced into the wider world, where everyday events - getting a haircut, being mistaken for a university lecturer, plucking up the courage to ask academic Paola Venditto on a date - become the stuff of screen heroics. Exquisitely photographed by Arauco Hernández, and converted from colour to monochrome, the movie's deceptively simple action evokes the heyday of Italian neorealism. But Veiroj also channels slapstick, screwball comedy and MGM musicals in charting Jellinek's amusing transformation, making it utterly irresistible.
