Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

This lightly One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest tale follows college drop-out Billy (Devon Bostick), who falls for one of the patients (Natalia Dyer) at the asylum where his father is a doctor. They prove a sweet couple, with Dyer (of Stranger Things fame) particularly effective as the too-sane-for-this-mad-world Virginia. Debut feature director Philip Harder skilfully summons the mood of the early 1970s, but the same can't be said for his clumsy adaptation of Glasgow Phillips's novel. The film leaves all sorts of strands flapping, and most egregiously relegates the Black Power awakening of Billy's childhood friend Nigel (Marchánt Davis) to a subplot. For while the film opens with archive footage of Alabama governor George Wallace's 1963 election rallying cry ("Segregation today, segregation tomorrow and segregation for ever!"), it largely jettisons its ostensible civil-rights theme in favour of a romantic drama that brings little new to the table.
