Review

A star rating of 2 out of 5.

Having co-directed ensemble dramedy Last Weekend in 2014 with Tom Williams, Tom Dolby makes his solo debut with a heartfelt drama that was inspired by the anguish of watching his father (renowned sound engineer Ray Dolby) succumb to Alzheimer's. However, any insights are frustratingly undermined by the increasingly melodramatic and implausible storyline, in which lauded artist Richard Smythson (Bruce Dern) starts showing signs of dementia. His deterioration alarms his second wife, Claire (Lena Olin), and it makes sense that she would want to help him rebuild bridges with his estranged daughter Angela (Juliet Rylance). However, every aspect of the process feels feigned, especially when Claire resumes her stalled painting career and indulges in an ill-advised fling. The acting is admirable, but the action is, sadly, superficial and pretentious.
