Our Score
Victor Mature returns as the custodian of Christ's bloodstained piece of homespun in this sequel to The Robe. As well as trying to keep the artefact from falling into the clutches of Caligula, he must also avoid falling prey to the many and various pleasures of the flesh that Rome has to offer. Demetrius is forced to become a gladiator, and his antics in the arena arouse the passion of Messalina (Susan Hayward) and antagonise the emperor himself, played by the scene-stealing and deliriously camp Jay Robinson. The result is a juicy excursion into ancient Rome that thankfully lacks the oppressive religiosity of the first film.

A Greek slave is forced into the gladiatorial service when he defends an elderly merchant from the attack of a sadistic centurion. But he also has the hallowed robe of Christ - which makes him the target of Emperor Caligula and the treacherous Messalina, because they believe it has special powers. However, the reluctant gladiator does not intend to give it up to them. Historical drama, starring Victor Mature, Susan Hayward, Michael Rennie and Debra Paget.
