Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

Tom Holland's third solo outing as the web-slinging hero begins moments after the end of Spider-Man: Far from Home, when his secret identity as Peter Parker is broadcast to the world. The effect is shattering for Peter and his friends and family, forcing him to ask Dr Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) to conjure up a solution. Instead, the sorcerer's spell smashes a hole in the Multiverse, creating callbacks to previous Spidey franchises with the return of formidable foes like Green Goblin (Willem Dafoe), Doc Ock (Alfred Molina) and Electro (Jamie Foxx). To his credit, director Jon Watts bides his time and mines the villains' situation for menace, humour and the emotional fallout from being in a new reality. Despite its epic length, the film breezes along, thanks to the spectacular action sequences (including a mind-blowing chase through the kaleidoscopic Mirror Dimension), some surprise appearances and genuinely moving moments, with Holland coming of age as both character and star.
