Wander Darkly

An intimate drama with a supernatural bent, this film of two halves stars Sienna Miller and Diego Luna as a couple whose relationship is on the skids. Redemption of sorts becomes a possibility when one of them unexpectedly dies, propelling the other into a series of fantastical imagined revisits of key moments of their life together: the first kiss, a fabulous holiday in Mexico, the birth of their child. Writer/director Tara Miele cycles through the "scenes from a marriage" in a gorgeously fluid manner and, in what is essentially a two-hander, her stars' acting mettle is tested, with Miller coming out on top. However, there's nothing either actor can do once the conceit runs out of road, which it does about 45 minutes from the end. From that point on, the whole thing descends into scenes of recrimination and name-calling. Watching a couple bicker is never much fun but, while the good times are rolling, the film's high concept and abundance of passion are impressive.
