Our Score
Jean-Pierre Melville's flawed but fascinating crime thriller - a tribute to the classic American gangster movies of the 1930s and 1940s - casts Jean-Paul Belmondo as an underworld figure and police informer for whom treachery is a religion. First he helps an ex-con plan a heist; then he betrays him. Then he plans the man's escape from prison. Oh, and he kills his girlfriend, too. Look out for the famous nine-minute take in the policeman's office: Melville insisted the camera crew wore black and donned face masks to eliminate the risk of reflection in the windows and mirrors.

Summary

A criminal resumes an underworld career after his release from prison, murdering an old friend and planning a robbery. However, when the police interrupt his attempted heist and he is shot and wounded, he begins to suspect someone has informed on him. Gangster drama, starring Jean-Paul Belmondo, Serge Reggiani and Monique Hennessy.
