Summary

Two sets of brothers with the same father meet for the first time at his funeral. While the three sons from the dead man's first marriage were neglected and disregarded, not even receiving real names, the offspring of his second wife were the pride of their father's life. Resentment between the two families soon erupts into violence, and a lengthy, brutal feud develops. Thriller, starring Michael Shannon and Travis Smith.

Rating: 4 out of 5.

A feud between two sets of Arkansas half-brothers spills over into violence in this simmering, low-budget drama from writer/director Jeff Nichols. Drawing on themes of revenge familiar from the western genre and many literary sources, it begins with Son Hayes (Michael Shannon) and brothers Boy (Douglas Ligon) and Kid (Barlow Jacobs) receiving news of their estranged father's death. Goaded by their resentful mother (Natalie Canerday), they turn up at the funeral, where Son offends the dead man's new family with a gesture of disgust and defiance. Their half-siblings - led by Michael Abbott Jr - demand an apology, but it's not long before the dispute escalates into bloodshed. Adroitly balancing southern caricature with authenticity, Nichols keeps as much violence as possible off-screen, concentrating instead on the inarticulate fury of these two clans, as they strive to defend their family's honour. Evocatively photographed by Adam Stone and featuring music from Ben Nichols and his band Lucero, this frequently recalls the measured melodramas of David Gordon Green (George Washington), who co-produces here.
