Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This lovely and loving story of a boy and his pet fawn, based on Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings's Pulitzer Prize-winning novel, takes its strength from an understatement of dramatic events and the underplaying of the actors (Gregory Peck and Jane Wyman as poor crop farmers; special Oscar-winning Claude Jarman Jr as their son). Veteran director Clarence Brown shapes it into a tale that touches the heart while never patronising the mind. Sentiment without sentimentality.
