Yash Chopra's Veer-Zaara is a politically hard-hitting romantic drama starring Bollywood's answer to Tom Cruise, Shahrukh Khan. It's a big, stylish and deeply enjoyable melodrama that uses an unlikely romance to tackle the continuing cross-border conflict between India and Pakistan. Khan plays Veer Pratap Singh, a principled rescue pilot with the Indian air force who becomes obsessed with Zaara (Preity Zinta), a provincial Pakistani girl he befriends after a bus accident strands her in India. Khan is suitably heroic, while Zinta brings Zaara to life with a persuasive portrayal of a complex woman tested by recent events. Like most Bollywood movies, the Romeo and Juliet-style predicament of star-crossed lovers facing seemingly insurmountable odds is offset by numerous entertaining musical interludes and an (until now) unused score from renowned composer Madan Mohan (who died in 1975). But it's Chopra's ability to extract raw emotion from his two marvellous leads that impresses most of all.

A pilot encounters a beautiful Pakistani girl who becomes stranded in his native India after a road accident. As the pair slowly fall in love, the shadow of their nations' enmity threatens their relationship. Yash Chopra's epic musical drama, which was praised for its positive message, features a soundtrack originally composed in the 1950s by Madan Mohan. Shahrukh Khan and Preity Zinta star. Chopra introduces the film, along with Mohan's son Sanjeev Kohli.
