Summary

The son of a wealthy man returns home, and promptly falls for a local girl - but it's not long before all thoughts of romance are driven from his mind following a bite from a werewolf, which leaves him suffering a nightmarish transformation each time the full moon rises. Review

A star rating of 4 out of 5.

This Universal classic not only established Lon Chaney Jr as a horror star but also instigated most of the cinematic werewolf lore concerning pentagrams, the Moon and the fatality of silver. As Lawrence Talbot, Chaney returns home to Wales and, after being warned of life-threatening danger by gypsy Maria Ouspenskaya, is attacked by her werewolf son Bela Lugosi and cursed to transform into a wolf man himself whenever the moon is full. An intelligent, literate script, fine direction by George Waggner, convincing make-up by Jack Pierce (Frankenstein) and a sympathetic performance by Chaney put this atmospheric chiller in the top rank of the Horror Hall of Fame.
