Review

An arrogant former sportsman learns a lesson in humility in this predictable comedy. Bernie Mac plays the ex-baseball superstar who's spent his retirement capitalising on having scored a record 3,000 hits. However, when it transpires that "Mr 3000" was actually three hits short, the now 47 year old re-joins his old team to set things straight. Despite a promising opening, the sluggish film never really develops beyond its initial premise. The humour is largely unfunny and even the game sequences are dull, leaving it to Mac's likeable performance to keep proceedings afloat. Angela Bassett adds some fire as an old flame but, like the rest of the cast, she's not used enough to make much of an impact.
