Our Score
With its peculiar mix of social realism and high-school musical, this Welsh-set drama plays like an episode of Glee directed by Ken Loach. In the scorching summer of 1976, idealistic teacher Minnie Driver rehearses a rock opera take on Shakespeare's The Tempest, while her Swansea secondary school class discover both themselves and each other. The pupils' infighting and other teachers' cynicism mean the production's future looks shaky, then the school hall burns down and another venue must be found. Director Marc Evans's sweetly sincere if rather underplayed coming-of-age saga is enlivened by on-the-nail performances from a caring-but-tough Driver and Aneurin Barnard as the star of the show. It may be slight entertainment, but the nostalgia factor gives it charm, and pop hits from the likes of David Bowie, ELO and the Beach Boys are used to stirring effect.

Idealistic drama teacher Vivienne is an outsider among the cynical staff and apathetic pupils of a 1970s south Wales school. Undeterred by general disinterest and sweltering heat, she sets out to inspire her class to stage a rock musical based on Shakespeare's The Tempest. Comedy drama, with Minnie Driver and Aneurin Barnard.
