Our Score
Director Ryuhei Kitamura's viscerally mesmerising horror is based on a short story from Clive Barker's Books of Blood series, and remains true to the core dread of Barker's best works. When struggling photographer Bradley Cooper snaps a subway mugging for an art exhibition, it puts him on the trail of serial killer Vinnie Jones, who is butchering late-night commuters on subway trains. Kitamura's ultra-gory, white-knuckle suspense ride terrifies to the end of the line, where a supernatural twist lurks. A strong stomach is required, although it's the consistently repellent tone and unsettling atmosphere that most rattle the nerves. Thankfully, Jones remains almost silent throughout, giving far more power to his ominous presence.
