Review

A star rating of 3 out of 5.

Gerard Butler plays a silver-tongued crook in this enjoyable action romp from director Joe Carnahan (The Grey). After a criminal-on-the-run (Frank Grillo) purposefully gets himself arrested in order to hide in the relative safety of police custody, a strategic cat-and-mouse game ensues between him, Butler's hitman and the people who hired him. On the side of the police, Alexis Louder (The Tomorrow War) is the film's standout, balancing high-octane stunts and a quick wit with a low tolerance for those less competent than herself. With its bombastic characters and kitsch 70s aesthetic, the film borrows heavily from both Quentin Tarantino and the classic cinema that inspired him. But there's still plenty of fun to be found in Copshop's charismatic characters and bullet-spraying final showdown.
