Our Score
Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright David Mamet puts the audience in a chokehold with this tightly coiled thriller about honour, ethics and martial arts. The movie rests on a standout performance from Chiwetel Ejiofor, who plays an LA jujitsu instructor asked to put aside his principles of self-defence and compete in a championship bout. He refuses until events involving his ambitious wife (Alice Braga) and a deceitful Hollywood action star (Tim Allen) force him into a corner where his ethics are more of a handicap than a virtue. Full of Mamet's usual narrative bluffs and feints (not to mention appearances by his regular actors Joe Mantegna and Ricky Jay), Redbelt updates the classic 1940s boxing movie, in which an honest fighter realises his samurai code is at odds with a world greased by money. Ejiofor is excellent in the lead, his placid presence radiating calm strength as his put-upon hero refuses to submit.

Premiere. A martial arts expert makes a living teaching his skills to others, but his strict principles prevent him competing professionally. After he befriends a movie star, things seem to be looking up. But a run of bad fortune and his wife's spiralling debts leaves him forced to compromise his ideals and fight in the ring. David Mamet's drama, starring Chiwetel Ejiofor, Tim Allen, Emily Mortimer and Alice Braga.
