Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

It may be slow moving and a shade creaky today, but this Greta Garbo vehicle positively smoulders, and contains some of the most overt sensuality you're likely to see in a Hollywood movie of the period. It's a classy MGM production, with George Fitzmaurice directing from a Pirandello play and debonair Melvyn Douglas and "the man you love to hate" Erich von Stroheim as Garbo's co-stars. The scenes between the blonde, fashionably bobbed Garbo and the handsome Douglas have an unusually charged eroticism: can't be just acting, surely? Watch for Hollywood gossip queen Hedda Hopper during her acting career, and the first Mr Mary Pickford, Owen Moore, brightening the doom 'n' gloom with a winningly jaunty performance.
