Summary

A gruff former minor-league baseball player agrees to coach a team of youngsters. However, he is shocked by how woefully hopeless the would-be sports heroes really are. Gritting his teeth, he vows to do his best, with the help of an old girlfriend's talented daughter and a grim-faced biker. Comedy, starring Walter Matthau, Tatum O'Neal, Ben Piazza, Joyce Van Patten and Vic Morrow.

Review

Rating: 3 out of 5.

Walter Matthau is on fine form here in one of the first sports comedies to use the now familiar "underdogs taking on the big boys" scenario. He plays a boozy coach trying to lick a bunch of no-hoper Little League baseball misfits into shape with a little help from star-pitcher Tatum O'Neal. As in A League of Their Own, it's the relationship between coach and team that pulls you in, while the child actors are more than a match for old pro Matthau - especially O'Neal, who has more screen presence than dad Ryan ever had. A small winner.
